The Advantages of the Palm Pre

Recently, a colleague of mine began to seriously question the future of Palm. They have been in shadows of the Blackberry (RIM) and iPhone for years now. iPhone is kicking some butt with their apps. You can’t deny it. And blackberry, well they are still #1 for email. I have personally switched to using my iPhone full time now. The email is prettier, but the navigation and layout are still not as business savvy as my bb.

With that said, I’ve had the opportunity to try out the Palm Pre and I have to say I really like it! I wouldn’t switch my iPhone for it – too much hassle, but I would certainly recommend the Palm Pre for business and personal.

Here’s a few key advantages that the Pre offers:

  • Ability to use multiple apps at once. One of my biggest pet peeves of my beloved iPhone is that I cannot toggle between apps seamlessly. I have an application on my iphone called eBuddy. It’s an instant chat feature that connects me with all my msn, yahoo, facebook, gmail, and other IM groups in one window. The concept is beautiful…the reality is frustrating. Why? It takes between 5 and 7 seconds for the app to load. The problem is that when you chat, you are typically multi-tasking so I cannot make a call or check email in the midst of a chat without serious delays each time. This would not happen with the Palm Pre. Each app opens on your mobile desktop and you can seamlessly shift from app to app with a flick of your finger…it’s beautiful, really!
  • The graphics on the palm pre are simply breathtaking. You like the iPhone screen? Well the Palm Pre is also a head turner ;) I should mention the screen’s a bit smaller than the iphone, but i honestly wasn’t that affected by it.
  • Combination of touch screen & keyboard: I love the feel of the Palm in my palm (sorry couldn’t resist!). But seriously, it’s a nice little device to carry around and with slide down keyboard, you get the best of both worlds.
  • The charger: Ok, this one isn’t a deal breaker, but it’s worth a mention. The Palm connects to the charger magnetically. It’s a really slick design and I love it. I would take this charger over my iPhone docking station any day.

The downside? It doesn’t have the 100,000+ apps that the iphone offers. It’s also only available on the Bell network which is restricting for loyal Rogers and Telus clients.
