Many people have asked me what the difference is between android and iPhone’s operating system, and more specifically what’s the difference between the new Samsung Galaxy S II and the iPhone 4S. Off the top, I have to say that both phones are phenomenal little machines. I’m pretty sure that no matter which one you choose to buy, you won’t be disappointed. Below is a chart I’ve put together to identify the key differences.
| Samsung Galaxy S II | iPhone 4S | |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Tech Specs: -4.26" display -Super AMOLED Plus -480x800 Translation: Bigger screen which is beneficial for email, watching videos, surfing the net, etc. The downside (for some) is that you have to use two fingers sometimes in order to nagivate around the screen. | Tech Specs: -3.5 " display -Retina Display -960 x 640 pixel resolution at 326 ppi Translation: Smaller screen with crystal clear graphics. iPhone was designed so that you can touch any part of the screen with your thumb while holding the phone in your hand. Apple/Steve Jobs believed this was the most effective way to navigate through applications on the phone. |
| Battery Life | Website specs states 6 hours of talk-time and 15 days stand-by. After initial testing the stand by time is a bit inflated. | Website specs state approximately 8 hours of talk time, and 20 hours stand-by. After initial testing, iPhone battery last longer over all. |
| Size | Less than 8.49mm thick except for small bubbled area on back of phone in two areasÉreally thin overall. | 9.3mm thick |
| Operating System | Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) | iOS 5: Comes with Siri - intelligent voice command software. Very cool concept, but still a bit glitchy and can't pull up content in Canada yet. Do Siri can't give you maps/directions within canada. |
| Widgets | Android's operating system allows you to install programs that can sit on your phones home screen(s). These are called widgets. The programs allow you to do all sorts of activities without having to launch on app. Such as check weather, view calendar, read social status updates from facebook and twitter, or check stocks. | iPhone purposely designed their phone with simplicity in mind and for that reason, there aren't as many ways to "customize" the phone. With iPhone's iOS all of your apps are located at the top level meaning that you do not have two layers like you do with the android - Top layer is your home screen with "apps" located on layer down (or in other words, you have to press app icon to reach main apps screen) |
